The Mascenic School Board met Monday to discuss the upcoming semester in the district, including updates from the facilities director and new business administrator, scheduling upcoming strategic plan meetings, and plans for an overnight field trip.

The field trip will take high school science students to the White Mountains to test water.

“It’s a real world application of science and research and it’s a very popular trip in the past and the kids get a very positive thing out of it,” said Thomas Kelly, director of student support services, standing in for Superintendent Ruthann Goguen.

Teacher Mike Smith will take 12 students on the trip, with tentatively planned dates of Nov. 9 and Nov. 10.

Gary Somero told the board that the district is being asked by the state to test its water, as a result of the pollution leak out of Merrimack’s Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics manufacturing plant.

“They’re asking that we voluntarily sample,” he said. “So we’ll do that with our December sample.”

At the board’s next meeting on Oct. 17, district principals will be invited to address standardized test scores and how they plan to improve district performance.

The next scheduled event after that is a strategic planning forum on Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We’ll get together and see what needs to be changed,” Vice Chair Paul Somero said.
