The ConVal boys’ soccer team gave Conant more than it could handle on Friday afternoon, as the well-oiled machine that is the Cougars kept their stellar season going.
ConVal kept Conant goalie Colby Bartlett busy, with the ball in the Oriole defensive zone for much of the day and shots coming fast and furious. The Cougars got goals from Luca Haufler, Aiden Hall, Ethan Phillips and Max Sturges as they beat Conant 4-0.
Meanwhile, ConVal keeper Noah Bell was relatively untested through the game, a James Record header going high over the crossbar, a wide Ryan Smith shot and a struck goalpost the closest Conant came to a goal.
ConVal is now 10-1, tied with Pembroke for the top spot in Division II. Of their five remaining games, Friday’s is the only one against a team with a winning record, as ConVal will travel to Souhegan (6-2-1) at 4 p.m. Perhaps no opponent knows ConVal better than Souhegan, given how closely the Saber coaching staff works with local players during offseason competition.
Conant, on the other hand, is now 5-6 with juggernaut Stevens (10-1) coming to town today at 4 p.m. After that, it’s a week off until traveling to winless Hinsdale.
