Cameron Salo has been selected to represent the Granite State at the 2016 USGA State Team Championship this week at the Country Club of Birmingham in Alabama. Jamie Ferullo and Ryan Kohler will be his teammates. Kohler will be returning to the State Team Championship after playing on the 2014 team, while Ferullo and Salo will be making their first appearances.
The event is a three-day, 54 hole stroke-play championship with the two lowest scores from each round counting towards the teamโs total. Each of the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia are eligible to participate in the event. Teams are made up of no more than three amateurs who are not an active collegiate golfer. The tournament started Wednesday and continues through Friday.
Salo has been one of the more steady players in New Hampshire over the last two seasons. Salo earned the 12th seed at the 2016 State Amateur Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals. At the 2016 Stroke Play Championship he finished T4 with a 2-under final score. He advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2015 State Amateur. Salo will be the youngest player on the State Team this season in his first year of eligibility for the Championship since college.
Salo is excited to show how New Hampshire players can play at a national level: โIโm extremely grateful for the opportunity – especially coming from a small town with not many golf courses around. I feel like I have more to play for and nothing to lose representing New Hampshire. Being from a small state in the northeast makes you want to prove that New Hampshire has a lot of guys that can play at a high level. โ
