PeterboroughTour East Hillgraveyard

Explore the lives of Peterborough’s early settlers at The Monadnock Center for History and Culture’s fall cemetery tour of the East Hill graveyard on Sept. 24 at 10 a.m.

Located on Old Street Road near the site of the first meeting house, the East Hill graveyard is Peterborough’s second oldest burying ground. It contains a range of early New England gravestone art and is the final resting place of several Revolutionary war soldiers, including William Diamond, a drummer boy at the battle of Lexington.

The tour will include discussion of the experiences of the people who are buried in the graveyard, what their daily lives were like during the 18th century, and early burial customs.

The program is free and open to the public. Donations are greatly appreciated.

The tour will be held rain or shine. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain. Parking is along the street.

For more information or directions to the graveyard, visit the Monadnock Center’s website at MonadnockCenter.org or call 924-3235.
