“Rebels with a Cause,” an award-winning documentary film, will screen at the Peterborough Community Theatre on Monday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
The film tells the story about about a band of citizens in California whose regional initiative ultimately spread and saved 14 National Seashores.
In the 1950s, the Bay Area was prime real estate coveted by developers whose plans would have decimated open space and mired the region in residential sprawl. The film’s website says “garden clubs, ranchers, farmers, conservationists, politicians from both parties, widows and volunteers” banded together to save Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate Recreation Area. A direct appeal to President Nixon, followed by citizen petitions, resulted in agreements that protected environmental treasures, yet allowed them to co-exist with the urban landscape of the Bay Area.
This event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted to support Fill the Void, the local initiative to construct the Contoocook Valley Visual and Performing Arts Center, a multi-purpose arts facility for school and community.
