Thanks to the booster club, ConVal football players are a little bit safer this season.

The Cougars are one of the first teams in the state to start wearing Guardian Caps, a padded protective device that fits over the helmet. ConVal head coach Paul Landau explained that the caps are aimed at reducing the chance of concussions.

โ€œItโ€™s just another way tat weโ€™re keeping players safe,โ€ Landau said.

ConVal players will wear the caps during all of their drills, practices and scrimmages. And, if a player gets a concussion during the season, he will wear the cap in-game for the remainder of the year.

The caps were paid for by funds raised by the booster club, which will put on another big fundraising effort this weekend. ConValโ€™s players will be out in many area towns selling discount cards, good for money off or free merchandise at local business. Get the card for $20, and it can be used once a day for a year for things like $1 off a Pizza Barn pizza or a free Dublin General Store cookie with purchase of a sandwich.

Players will be selling cards this Saturday from 9 to noon in the general stores in Hancock, Dublin Francestown and Greenfield; they will be also be at Edmunds in Antrim. In Peterborough they will be at the Brady’s plaza, the Peterborough Shopping Plaza, Nonies, and the Big Apple.

โ€œWeโ€™re hoping if we raise enough money, we can buy [the caps] for the middle Landau said.school team, too,โ€
