Peterborough‘Eva Hesse’ at Community Theatre

“Eva Hesse,” a documentary film about one of America’s foremost postwar artists, will be shown at the Peterborough Community Theatre on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m.

“Eva Hesse” tells the story of the German–born American artist who was one of the few women recognized as central to the New York art scene of the late 1960s. She had more than 20 group shows scheduled for 1970, in addition to being chosen for a cover article in ArtForum magazine. Hesse died from a brain tumor in May 1970 at the age of 34.

With dozens of new interviews, footage of Hesse’s artwork, and a wealth of newly-discovered archival imagery, the documentary not only traces the artist’s path, but also engages in a lively investigation into the creative community of 1960s New York and Germany.

The film also explores Hesse’s youth as a Jew in 1930s Germany, a country she would return to in 1964 to face her past and forge her future.

All seats are $9, with tickets available at the door. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
