Bennington’s town hall and clock will be getting a facelift.
The town’s Select Board agreed during its Wednesday meeting to pay Norman Mercier Painting of Antrim $13,700 to paint and do some minor repairs to the left side of the town hall and $1,350 to paint the town clock, which is housed at the Congregational Church.
“The building is in pretty good shape, but I think we should do it this year,” said Selectman James Cleary. “I think we should wait to do the cupola when we do the back of the building.”
Town Administrator Denise French said Mercier has already completed work to the front and right side of the building. Work on the back and to the cupola does not have a timeline for competition, according to French.
The board also agreed on a contract to heat town buildings over the winter.
Bennington will be locked into $1.50 per gallon for propane and fuel prices will be locked in at $1.90 through Rymes. French said the town could have agreed to pay whatever the market price was for heating fuel, but the stability in prices during an election season made sense.
The board also thanked Recreation Director Bethany Craig for her recent help at Whittemore Beach. Craig, who was in attendance at the meeting, said she was happy to help out and get the beach a better reputation. Cleary said that he was willing to spearhead a road advisory board, which will create a short and long term plan to address fixing town roads. Cleary said he would look for three to five volunteers to help him with the project.
