With the threatening forecast leading up to the start of the 2nd annual Caddyshack Classic 5K race, the athletes were greeted with a slight reprieve from the sweltering temperatures. Thanks to an early start time of 8 a.m., the race began before the mercury really began to climb. But it didnโ€™t take long for things to heat up, with both the racing and the weather condition.

With the race taking place on the back nine of the Shattuck Country Club in Jaffrey, the contestants were regaled with sweeping views of Mount Monadnock as the cruised the wooded cart paths of the scenic course.

Recent Mascenic graduate Avery Traffie jumped out to an early lead and had a 30 meter gap back to second place a quarter mile in as the participants left the driving range and headed towards the 10th tee. That lead would continue to grow until Traffie made a wrong turn at the 14th tee, about a mile in, before retracing his steps finding himself in fifth place before he got back on track. Traffie worked himself back through the pack and ended up clear of the field, winning in 19 minutes, 55 seconds.

In the battle for second place, Sam Main, Mascenicโ€™s assistant cross country coach, led the chase group over most of the course but was shadowed, and then caught, by Nels Traffie over the final mile. Fourth place finisher and womenโ€™s winner, local ace Kristen Ramey ran 21 minutes, 3 seconds, with current Mascenic cross country captain Logan Traffie taking the fifth spot.

Winner in each of the age groups were Amelia Smith and Avery Traffie in the 19 and under category, Ryan Siegmann and Lance Somero in the 20 to 29 category, Kristen Ramey and Ian Ramey in the 30 to 39 category, Naomi Traffie and Nels Traffie in the 40 to 49 category, and Michele Siegmann and Tim Fisher in the 50 to 59 age category.

While the results were tabulated and awards were prepared, participants were treated to a buffet breakfast in the Grille at the Shattuck. โ€œNot too many races serve breakfast after you run,โ€ said Race Director Mike Smith, โ€œbut itโ€™s a nice addition and sets this race apart from others. And the course is spectacular too. We really appreciate the Shattuck for letting us use the location for this beautiful race.โ€

Proceeds from the event go to the Monadnock Community Early Learning Center to help aid child care services to the region.
