The Andy’s Summer Playhouse Greenhouse Artist Incubation Program will present a staged reading of “George” on Friday, July 15.

The young actors at Andy’s, affectionately called “Andy’s Kids,” will be performing a staged reading of a theatrical adaptation by Jess Barbagallo of the award-winning book “George” by Alex Gino.

“I’m excited to begin development on ‘George,’ the story of a transgirl named Melissa who longs to play the lead in her school’s production of Charlotte’s Web. It’s a real challenge to consider how to lift something already-so-wonderful like this to the stage,” said playwright Jess Barbagallo.

The event will begin with a dance performance by Orange Grove Dance and end with a talkback with Barbagallo, Gino, Director Brooke O’Harra, and the cast of Andy’s. There will be a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres.

This staged reading is part of a new initiative at Andy’s called The Greenhouse, a metaphysical extension of the playhouse, where an invited artist or group of artists hold residency for as little or as long as possible to create a new script. This initiative encourages experimentation, scene readings, workshops of movement ideas, and open-work sessions with Andy’s kids so they may be exposed to the process of brainstorming and developing ideas for the stage. The Greenhouse culminates into a public reading of a full script.

“George,” suitable for all ages, will be performed on July 15, at 7 p.m. in the Yellow Barn adjacent to Andy’s.

General admission is $14 for adults and $7 for children12 and under, and may be purchased online at www.andyssummerplayhouse.org, at the box office, or by calling 654-2613.
