Onlookers watch rubber duckies race over the Nubanusit River falls near Putnam Park during last year's Lucky Duck Race.

Two thousand numbered rubber ducks will be dropped into the Nubanusit River from Putnam Park on Saturday at 2 p.m. to begin the 14th annual Lucky Duck Race.

Ducks will race to the confluence of the Nubanusit and Contoocook rivers. The “owner” of the first duck over the finish line at Depot Park will win $1,000. Second place wins, $250, and third place, $150.

Fourth prize is an airplane ride for as many as three people over Mount Monadnock and vicinity, courtesy of Lee and Harvey Sawyer of Silver Ranch Airpark, Jaffrey. Gift certificates also will be awarded.

“The Lions Club is pleased to offer this community event,” said Linda Guyette, race co-chair.

Winners will be announced at the finish line at Depot Park. Ticket holders do not have to be present to win. Club members will be selling tickets around town right up until the time of the race, according to Dee McGrath Fischer, race co-chair. Duck tickets are available at Copies & More and the Peterborough town clerk’s office, as well as from members of the Lions Club.
