We think of health and wellness as gifts, and we also recognize our lives and health can change in an instant.
That’s why every little thing we can do to invest in our well-being is worth the time and effort.
In fact, it’s empowering.
Today’s special health section is devoted to that cause, looking at what an active life looks like and how we can nurture it every day in our own lives.
We learn from wellness and fitness experts that the first steps are making a commitment to lead a healthy life and then figuring out what we like to do. Is it walking, yoga, working out at a gym, playing the piano, gardening? Whatever it is, we make time for it: We join a class; we become members at a fitness club; we make plans with others to hike or run.
In short, we make it happen.
Staying healthy is a matter of personal responsibility, but we know it’s easier to get into the habit of keeping fit if we start young. So it’s important to encourage young people to play sports, dance, ski, or play tennis, or anything else that engages the mind and the body.
It is also vital that we model an active life for young people and for the people in our lives we love.
No matter your age, we can all benefit from maintaining an active lifestyle. And there are things we can do to help keep ourselves on track.
Dr. Elizabeth Cooley, of Peterborough, tells us she threw out her television set 25 years ago, noting how much time TV and other screens take up. She also talks about how powerful it can be to count your blessings when it comes to your health. Being able to do things you love that are good for your mind and body is priceless.
Aging specialist Owen Houghton, 79, of Jaffrey, reminds us how meaningful it is to be socially engaged in one’s community. Attending meetings and events for your church, service club and local nonprofits is rewarding and gets you out of the house. It’s a win-win for you and your community.
The more active you are, the more you’ll inspire those around you to get active and the more you’ll feel good knowing you made an investment in yourself.
