What appears to be a medical issue caused the driver of a tractor trailer truck to go off the road and into a ditch, according to police.

On Tuesday at about 7:56 a.m., just west of the Brookside Mobil, William Ray, 62, of Fort White, Florida, was traveling east on Route 101 in a 2016 Kenworth tractor trailer truck. The truck then suddenly crossed into the westbound lane, and continued veering left until it went off the left side of the road, where it struck an embankment and a tree.

โ€œHe reported that he had some kind of medical issue just prior to the accident,โ€ said Wilton Police Chief Brent Hautanen Tuesday.

Ray sustained some minor wounds to his head, according to Hautanen, but both his injuries and the issue that apparently caused the accident were non-lifethreatening. Ray was transported to St. Josephโ€™s Hospital in Nashua by the Wilton Ambulance.

The truck came to rest mired deep in the mud off the road. A section of Route 202 was covered in mud and debris as a result of the accident, and it was closed for approximately 45 minutes until the N.H. Department of Transportation could clear the debris. Route 101 was then opened to a single land of traffic while the truck was being removed. The road was reopened fully at about 12:45 p.m.

Rayโ€™s truck received extensive damage to its front end and was towed from the scene.
