To the editor:
Donald Trump isn’t important; he never was, but what he represents is. The name calling (racist, bigot, sexist etc.) ignores the fact that Increasing numbers of Americans feel their interests aren’t being represented and their values disparaged.
Ford Motors has announced plans to build a factory in Mexico that will employ close to 300 people; suck it up Michigan. Securing our borders does not mean halting immigration, but should allow us to weed through applicants to provide entry to people wanting to become a part of our nation, who have skills we need or who are fleeing war-torn countries. It means screening out drug traffickers, the criminal and the violent.
I really don’t think The Donald will be the nominee, and the backlash will destroy the Republican Party. That may not be a bad thing as the Tea Party dragged the party so far right they ended up talking to themselves. The Republicans may have an opportunity to redefine themselves.
The Democrats are hardly off the hook.
My working class family has been registered Democrats for two generations until it dawned on us the party no longer represents us. Diogenes finally found his honest man in Bernie Sanders, but it doesn’t matter as Bernie never had a chance from the beginning. Bernie won a huge victory in New Hampshire, but super delegates, even before the primary, were committed to Hillary. So much for democracy.
Hilary is so very much beholden to Wall Street and other big money that she will be incapable of reform. While campaigning for his wife in New Hampshire, Bill Clinton accused Bernie of sexism. Now who said there wasn’t some humor in this campaign?
These issues are not going away and we can ignore them at our peril.
