The tax rate in New Ipswich is up by nearly $1 this year, with the local education tax accounting for the majority of the increase.

The total tax rate for the coming year has been set at $22.22 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, compared to last year’s rate of $21.25. A person with a home valued at $200,000 can expect to pay $4,444 this year. The same home, if its valuation did not change, would have paid $4,250 last year, a $194 difference.

The local school portion of the rate saw the biggest increase, jumping from $13.75 to $15.41. The increase is due not only to rising costs this year from the district, but also the lack of a one-time injection of state revenue the district received last year, more than $1 million, which drove down the school tax for that year.

The state education portion has also risen, with this year’s rate set at $1.83, compared to $1.78 last year.

The county portion has only a slight increase, rising three cents from $1.02 to $1.05.

The municipal portion dropped significantly, easing some of the increases in other areas. The municipal portion of the rate for 2021 is $3.93, a 77-cent decrease from last year.
