To the editor:
The change of the name of the Peterborough Historical Society has been upsetting me since it happened. From the beginning, I have spoken to board members, trustees and officers. You can ask more than 100 people where The Monadnock Center for History & Cultureย is and most do not know. Most every New England town has a historical society. Why not Peterborough?
The name adopted was to include more input on the area, which is confusing and not needed. I have heard many complaints but nobody has brought the subject up. Every town Historical Society sponsors exhibits for these events, lectures and programs. In Peterborough, money is being spent for newspaper ads, yet no money is available to open the building except for a few days per week. What about the bus tours that come during the leaf season and could include the Historical Center on their tours and pay a fee?
The foliage is lovely in the area behind the building and the tour could visit the town instead of stopping at Ocean State Job Lot to take pictures and visit the shopping area? The name has tried to be shortened to โThe Centerโ. We already have The Community Center, and Center Town Plaza. Who needs another center?
The Peterborough Historical Society should restore its rightful name. The building was given by Clara F. Bass to house the Peterborough Historical Society.
