If there’s one team to avoid in the DIII field hockey tournament this year, it’s Monadnock. The Huskies were the class of the division, going 12-0-2 and only allowing three regular season goals.

But, if there was one team that could knock them down, it looked like the Vikings had the best shot. After all, they’d been one of only two teams to even tie Monadnock this year, a 1-1 game back at the end of September.

For a moment in Saturday’s playoff game, it looked like Mascenic might do the unthinkable. After Monadnock went up 1-0, the Vikings answered back off a corner — one of Mascenic’s biggest strengths this year, head coach Selena Shaw said. Sydney Letters put the ball in and it was knotted at one.

But the lead wouldn’t last, as Maddie Ellnor scored her second of the game for Monadnock and put the Huskies up 2-1. The score would stand and Mascenic was knocked out.

“Unfortunately Maddie is a very strong player and was able to take advantage of two scoring opportunities,” Shaw said.

Hannah Tucker, Letters and Megan Bergeron played outstanding games, she added.

“Finishing the season with a home playoff win and a solid performance against the No. 1 seed, I can’t say I am at all disappointed.”
