GIRLS’ SOCCER

Monadnock 3, Conant 2

Heather Gonyea scored twice for Conant Wednesday off assists from Irelynd Aucoin and Megan Graff, but the Orioles fell 3-2 to Monadnock.

“We carried the majority of play but could not capitalize on opportunities,” coach Adam Patria said.

Monadnock 3, Conant 2

It was deja vu for the Conant girls Saturday, as they controlled play throughout their game at Monadnock, coach Adam Patria said, but came up just short yet again.

Conant gave up an own goal in the first half and allowed Monadnock to go up 2-0 in the second before Heather Gonyea broke the ice, heading in the Orioles’ first goal off an assist from Jennah Harvey. Conant gave up a second own goal to go down 3-1; Harvey put one into the side netting unassisted to conclude the game’s scoring.

Conant (1-6) is at Keene Wednesday.

WLC 3, Hinsdale 2

Hinsdale presented a real challenge to the WLC girls on Wednesday. In the first half, the Warriors only managed four shots and ended the half ahead 1-0 on a Adri Bausha goal from a Bri Fish assist.

In the second half the Warriors came out with more determination, head coach Dan Ayotte said. WLC took 16 shots in the half and went up 3-0 going into the last 10 minutes of the game after goals by Elisabeth Jacob with an assist from Brooke Lane, and Sam Boette with an assist from Jacob.

That’s when Hinsdale mounted a good comeback, scoring two goals in the last 10 minutes; fortunately for the Warriors, they were able to close it out for the win. Tiffany Cuddihy played very well in goal with 13 saves,” Ayotte said.  Freshman Maddie VanBlarigan also played outstanding both on defense and in midfield when needed.

WLC 4, Hinsdale 1

Elisabeth Jacob had a hat-trick for WLC against Hinsdale Saturday as the Warriors dominated and won. Hinsdale’s keeper did well to keep the score as low as it was, WLC coach Dan Ayotte said, as the Warriors outshot the Pacers 28-8.

Adri Bausha also scored for WLC.

Starting keeper Tiffany Cuddihy made four saves before coming out with an injury; eighth-grader Hiba Koudsi spelled her briefly and made another four saves before giving way to Bri Fish, who finished out the game with three saves.

The back four of Avery Krug, Ella Kelley, Savannah Dubois, and Maddie Van Blarigan were solid, Ayotte said.

WLC (4-4) is at Monadnock Wednesday at 4 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

WLC tops Hinsdale twice

The Brennan brothers had their way with Hinsdale last week, combining for 11 goals in two games as WLC beat the Pacers 9-0 Wednesday and then 7-3 Saturday.

Head coach Dan Nelson said the defense came out strong in Wednesday’s shutout. Aside from Troy and Sean Brennan’s six goals, Nate Brown scored on a long shot, Dominic Hutchinson came up from the back line for a nice run that resulted in a Hinsdale own goal, and Paul Van Blarigan added another.

Hinsdale was much stronger Saturday, Nelson said, in the 7-2 WLC win. The Brennans tallied five goals, Sam Townsend pounded one in and Austin Kimball scored on a great shot.

“Really feel good about the team,” Nelson said. “The bench are coming out and making a difference for us.”

The defense, led by Ethan Smith, was excellent once again, and sophomore goalie Joe Krug is “bringing it,” and is much improved this season, Nelson said.

WLC (3-3-1) hosts Monadnock Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Conant 2, Monadnock 0

The Orioles were short six players Wednesday but still mustered a 2-0 shutout win against Monadnock behind great defense, head coach Tom Harvey said.

Freshman keeper Jordan Nagle got the shutout in net and freshman Joshua DiPasquale and junior Noah Mertzic scored Conant’s goals.

The Orioles host Keene Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Keene 3, Mascenic 1

The Vikings honored lone senior starter Shea Zina at Wednesday’s game against Keene, but came up short on Senior Day. Mascenic was originally scheduled to close out their season next week with two games against Hinsdale, but the NHIAA determined that those games would fall outside of the time window they set for regular-season competition, so they were canceled, and Mascenic now awaits the Division III playoff seeding, as the tournament is scheduled to start Monday.

NOTES

Quiet weekend
at Mascenic

The Vikings were held out of actions for a variety of reasons this weekend despite having a slew of games scheduled.

Friday’s home cross-country meet against Conant and the Vikings’ rescheduled field hockey game against Monadnock were both called off as torrential downpours that swept the region. Friday night’s girls’ volleyball game against Bishop Guertin was not weather-dependent, but was still canceled out of an abundance of caution after the district’s announcement that a Mascenic student had tested positive for COVID-19, as was Saturday’s soccer game against Keene. And finally, Mascenic’s field hockey game at Conant Sunday was taken off the schedule to prevent Mascenic from playing two games in 24 hours, as they were scheduled to start the NHIAA Division III playoffs at Hopkinton Monday at 3 p.m.
