Craig Zanetta believes he’s in Peterborough for a reason. The Monterey, California native moved to town a couple years back as part of a grand mission — his life’s journey, guided by the forces in the spirit world. It’s a journey, he said, that parallels many important figures — Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, Ben Gates from the “National Treasure” movies, for example.

“There’s a spirit energy out there that’s bigger than us, and basically by my journey I am documenting it,” Zanetta said. “It’s almost as if there’s proof that there’s direction to our being rather than just haphazard events.”

The latest step on his journey? Renting out the Unitarian Universalist Church in Peterborough for a sermon/one-man show.

Inspired by Jonathan Edwards, the Connecticut preacher who delivered the fiery 1741 sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Zanetta plans to “lambaste” the audience before getting into a more open discussion. He hopes for a slightly warmer reception than Edwards’ congregation, who didn’t cotton to being told they were going to hell.

“They did not like it because most of them thought they were Puritans, they thought they were Congregationalists and they thought ‘I’m in church! Why are you lecturing me about being in church?’

The sermon starts at 7 p.m. and Zanetta plans to orate for about three hours or so — “Bring a cushion,” he joked. He also hopes anyone interested in helping out show up at 6 p.m., preferably in Colonial garb, so they could man tables or otherwise assist.
