The 1984 film “Purple Rain” will be screened at the Peterborough Community Theatre for one showing on Monday, May 9.

The film, starring and featuring songs written and performed by Prince, won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.

Written by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn and directed by Albert Magnoli, the story tells the story of a young musician, tormented by an abusive situation at home, who must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his own dissatisfied band, as his star begins to rise.

The soundtrack of the movie contains iconic songs from the 1980s including: “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Baby I’m a Star,” “Jungle Love,” “and The Bird.”

According to Rolling Stone magazine, the film “turned Prince into a movie star and grossed $70 million at the box office, making it the 10th highest-grossing movie of that year.”

“I first started listening to Prince, and funk music in general, in the early ’80s. In fact, I had the good fortune of seeing Prince live at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, during his Purple Rain tour,” said Carol Nelson, owner of Peterborough Community Theatre. “Prince’s music spans the ages and I wanted the opportunity to showcase one of his most memorable accomplishments to not only his long-time fans, but to ones yet to be made.”

Admission is $9 at the door. A DVD and movie poster will be raffled.

The film is rated R.
