More than 300 people attended Greenfield’s third annual Fire and Ice event in the center of Greenfield Saturday night.
The Greenfield Fire Department and the Greenfield Fire Association organized a mile-long parade of emergency vehicles from East Road to Oak Park, led by this year’s grand marshal, longtime town volunteer Bruce Dodge. Stephenson Memorial Library hosted the Festival of Trees, while the Greenfield Elementary School PTO ran a cookie walk and the Greenfield Historical Society was open with exhibits and raffle ticket sales.
Shannon Bilodeau of the Oak Park Committee helped organize food and entertainment, and the Friends of the Greenfield Meetinghouse volunteer cooks Sharon Andrews and Warren Aldrich teamed up to serve hot homemade food to the crowds.
The Fire Department awarded the following prizes to parade participants: Furthest Distance Traveled — Nelson Fire Department; Best Float — the Selfridge siblings; Best Personal Vehicle –Diane Lacourse, Kathy Seigars and family; and Best Commercial Vehicle – Steve’s Towing.
Hannah Banana and Heather McCormack of Together We Heal performed a “fire dance” using their flaming dragon staffs.
“Things were a little crazy on Saturday because the Fire Department got an actual call in the afternoon and they all had leave right in the middle of setup, but the whole Fire Association helped and pulled other people in to help, and we got it done,” said Linda Dodge of the Greenfield Fire Association.
Bruce Dodge, Linda’s husband, built and hand-painted the nine tiny reindeer who rode atop the Greenfield ladder truck.
“The reindeer might get to spend the holidays on top of the fire station, if we can figure out how to get them up there without damaging the roof,” Linda said.
The GFA handed out s’mores kits to young visitors who could use them at the bonfire in the field at Oak Park, visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, participate in games and watch firedancers perform.
Andrews and Aldrich reported that crowds went through five crockpots of homemade macaroni and cheese and hundreds of hot dogs, chili dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches. The event raised more than $1,000 for the Greenfield Fire Association, which provides direct support to Greenfield Fire Department.
