After a period of reorganization at the Antrim Transfer Center, the town’s “Swap Shop” reopened to the public in a new location on Saturday, Aug. 8.
The shop, formerly housed in a shed near the transfer station bins, is now in a new storage container near the transfer station exit and has dedicated parking.
James Panico of the Antrim Community Board, who leads the Swap Shop project, said the move was part of a larger town initiative to improve the traffic flow and efficiency at the transfer station.
“Moving the Swap Shop from the old shed to a new storage container with dedicated parking near the exit freed up valuable space in the main yard and streamlined vehicle movement through the facility,” Panico said. “The new site offers a cleaner, better-organized setup, and we officially reopened the doors to residents on August 8th.”
The Swap Shop is open on Saturdays during the warmer months from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., depending on weather and volunteer availability. Visits to the Swap Shop are open to residents with a valid Antrim town permit sticker and are limited to 15 minutes per day.
“The community impact has already been very positive. Beyond keeping gently used tools, toys, and household goods out of the waste stream, the Swap Shop serves as a valuable local resource. It offers residents an easy way to share materials, reduce household expenses, and connect with neighbors in a welcoming space,” Panico said.
It relies on volunteers to stay open throughout spring, summer and fall.
“The community’s willingness to pitch in has been instrumental in making the relaunch a success,” Panico said.
In 2022, the Antrim Community Board reopened the Swap Shop after several years of closure due to staffing shortages.
Gordon Allen, founder of the ACB, said that the Swap Shop has a significant environmental impact.
“The most important thing is the Swap Shop keeps stuff out of the landfill. Items are repurposed and reused,” Allen stated.
Because the new Swap Shop is smaller than the previous space, residents are asked to carefully check and follow donation guidelines. The ACB requests that residents “only bring items that are clean, attractive, functional, and have all necessary parts.”
Furniture or oversized items, items listed on the A.R.T.S. fee list, including refrigerators, televisions, vehicle or boat batteries, and stoves and ovens, are not accepted at the Swap Shop. Clothing is also not accepted at the Swap Shop and should be placed in the clothing donation receptacles next to the storage unit.
According to the transfer station policy, Swap Shop volunteers have sole discretion to approve or reject donations to the shop. Items can be taken for personal use and are not intended for resale.
