The ConVal wrestling team crowned a new state champion in their home gym Sunday as freshman Lane Williams wrestled his way to a Division III title with relative ease.
Following Saturday’s snowout, the Cougars hosted 23 of Division III’s top teams — including Conant and Mascenic — on Sunday, and competitors left it all on the mat in what would be for some their final matches of the season or their high school careers.

No one was better on the day than Williams, who won all four of his matches by pinfall, with no match lasting more than 90 seconds; by the time the 120-lb. freshman was raising his arm in victory after pinning Dayton Brigante of Winnisquam for the championship, he’d wrestled for a total of just under four minutes over the entire meet.
Williams will take his title to the Meet of Champions Saturday morning at Pinkerton Academy, and he’ll be joined by several other locals. The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the MOC’s, which means ConVal’s Collin Mao and Mascenic’s Chase Sasner and Emmitt Nichols also made the cut.
Mao, a 138-lb. junior, won four of five matches by pinfall on his way to third place, battling back from the consolation bracket after losing in the semifinals. Sasner, a 113-lb. senior, lost his first match in the semis as well but pulled out a quick pin in the consi round and then eked out an 8-4 decision over Winnisquam’s Lucas Durphey. Nichols, a 120-lb. sophomore, ran into Williams on his way through the bracket and then split a pair of lengthy contests in the consi-semis and third-place matches.

Conant was unable to qualify anyone for the MOC’s but still had some wrestlers fare well on the day. Senior Jacob Levesque won three matches at 175 lbs. before losing in the cons-semis and sophomore Roland Dumont pinned Mascenic’s Isaiah Luhtjarv at 144 lbs.

Aside from their qualifiers, Mascenic got wins from senior Thomas Wylie (215 lbs.), sophomore Chase Bishop (157 lbs.) and Brodie Honeywell (138 lbs.).

ConVal’s other winning wrestlers were sophomore James Medeiros, who won three matches at 157 lbs. before losing in the consi-semis and junior Cayden Park with one win at 285 lbs.
