The Hancock Town Library will host author Ken Sheldon for a talk on Revolutionary War naval hero Captain John Manley on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.
In 1776, Manley was a celebrated naval figure praised by George Washington and John Adams, though his story has largely been forgotten over time. Sheldon, Manley’s fifth great-grandson, spent years researching his ancestor’s life. His illustrated presentation will trace Manley’s rise and fall, including a successful lawsuit in which he was represented by John Adams.
Sheldon will also read from his new book, “Captain John Manley: Patriot, Privateer, and America’s Forgotten First Hero,” which was published to coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary. Sheldon’s previous work includes writings for Yankee Magazine and New Hampshire Magazine, as well as books written under the persona of Yankee humorist Fred Marple.
The event is free and open to the public.
