Arsenic and lead: Temple logging and Wilton water
John Barry owned a large former apple orchard in Temple. He died recently and his niece and nephew inherited the land. Over the last couple of months it has been logged. The apple orchard spray widely used until the 1950s, lead arsenate, contained lead and arsenic and was known to contaminate the soil. In fact, I was told when considering buying a piece of another apple orchard that I would have to remove the top 10 inches of soil before I could legally build. The Department of Environmental Services has found very high levels of arsenic and lead on North Road flowing into Mill Brook, the pristine headwater stream. No state or local official has to my knowledge slowed the operation down. It is alarming. I am writing Governor Ayotte and asking her to intervene.
