A 53-year-old hiker was carried off Mount Monadnock on Sept. 6 after sustaining a serious, non-life-threatening injury near the summit in Jaffrey.
New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers were alerted around 12:30 p.m. Monadnock State Park staff quickly reached the injured hiker, identified as Neathery Brenzel of Brookline, Mass., to render initial aid. Additional park staff, conservation officers, members of the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, and bystanders helped carry Brenzel down the mountain, arriving at the base around 4:30 p.m.
Officials noted that Brenzel and her hiking companions were well prepared for their trip. The state’s Search and Rescue Fund and the Hike Safe Card program funded the Fish and Game response. Neither program receives funding from hunting, fishing, or trapping license fees. For details on search and rescue funding, visit wildlife.nh.gov.
