Public service

Our ‘public servants” don’t serve the public anymore. In Washington, D.C., President Trump serves himself with more than two billion dollars of income from the crypto ventures that funnel bribes directly to him and his family. Millions of our dollars are spent on his disastrous vanity projects like the ballroom, Reflecting Pool, Arch de Trump, and so on. Republicans in Congress serve Trump by allowing his illegal grift, and serve themselves through insider trading and money from lobbyists.
Serving the public is rarely seen in Concord, with Republicans in charge of the Governorship, the Executive Council, the Senate and the House. The New Hampshire Republican Party is in thrall to ‘Free Staters’ who chose to invade our state to create a quasi-libertarian utopia knowing little more than the state motto, “Live Free or Die.”
Too many elected officials are captivated by the power they believe their position confers on them and they learn to use it to serve themselves rather than the public. Moneyed interests in politics exacerbate these corrupt tendencies. Let’s demand that our elected officials serve us by prioritizing public health, public education, the housing crisis, the environment, and the democracy that was founded to protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This fall I’ll vote for candidates that view themselves as public servants and can resist the temptation to serve themselves. Republicans in Washington and Concord have proven that they are not public servants. I call on Democrats to prove that they are.
