Hoping for change
In reply to ‘Wake Up America’ (Monadnock Ledger 7/9/2026), in which the writer listed four trends he sees converging to challenge 250 years of progress:
1. Characterizing today’s youth as “infatuated” with socialism is insulting and denigrating. Listen to them; they are underemployed, struggling financially, and deeply pessimistic that the “American Dream” will ever be within their reach. The youth I know are not engaged in politics out of hate but real concern for their personal well-being and that of others.
2. The claim that a “steady influx of Muslim extremists” is driving an adoption of Sharia law in the U.S. is false and factually unfounded. No state or federal courts are following Sharia law, and no credible legislation has ever been introduced by Democrats or anyone else to adopt it. Christian Nationalists, on the other hand, like Matthew D. Taylor of the Center on Faith and Justice (Georgetown University), are pushing to destroy and remake America a “Christian nation” vs. a country of civil, secular law.
3. The claim that the Democratic Party is run by “anti-American radicals” is baseless. The party’s platform focuses on traditional institutions and civil rights, whereas the MAGA movement prioritizes anti-establishment nationalism. If the Democratic Party is to be faulted, it’s that its tent is large, diverse and contains a wide range of views.
4. It is not blind “hatred of President Trump”; disapproval of him crosses party lines. Opposition to him and his policies is rooted in his inability to follow the law and disregard for democratic norms; decreased access to health care and insurance; erosion of civil rights; and the virtual abandonment of decades of progress made in public health, safety, and the environment.
I’m sorry Mr. Bosse doesn’t feel he’ll be alive to see change. I am hopeful it’s coming.
