Peterborough residents are stunned by reports that one man is dead and another was injured in a stabbing incident Sunday night.

A man was found dead from gunshot wounds in the driveway of a Grove Street house at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.

The resident of the home, who had been stabbed, was taken to a local hospital.

Eric Blackmer, who lives a few houses down from where the incident occurred, said the whole neighborhood is “traumatized.”

“This is a neighborhood. We all know one another,” Blackmer said Monday morning.

Blackmer said he was spreading mulch in his yard Sunday night at about 8:30 p.m. when he “heard a really loud bang.”

“I thought, July 4 is over, is someone still setting off fireworks? I didn’t hear or see anything leading up to it. Then it was followed by smaller bangs, and then the first thing I heard was a small child screaming,” Blackmer said. “Then I knew something was really wrong and I knew it was worse than I thought.”

Blackmer, who lives just a few houses away from the Peterborough police station, said he then ran out into the street to see what was happening.

“I saw a police car pull up fast, and then it pulled away, and the neighbors were saying someone had been stabbed and taken to the hospital,” Blackmer said.

Blackmer said he and other neighbors then approached the house and saw a person lying in the driveway.

“I looked down and saw the guy was obviously dead,” Blackmer said. “We all know one another here, but I didn’t know the person lying on the ground.”

Blackmer said that while the incident is horrific no matter how it happened, he and other neighbors are profoundly shocked by the possibility that this could have been a random crime.

“This is not a place where you get many random people walking in. I have lived here for 30 years and never felt at risk at all. My wife and I left Boston because there were murders happening there every day,” Blackmer said. “Whatever the case is, however it happened, I just feel horrible for the children who were there, and for the wife. We all know each other, and we know the family was present when this happened, and they have to be deeply traumatized. It is just terrifying.”

The section of Grove Street where the incident happened, across from the Peterborough police station, was closed to traffic.

According to Blackmer, a crime scene van was parked in front of the residence where the incident happened first thing Monday morning.

“I am having to duck under police tape to get to my house,” Blackmer said. “I had some tree work scheduled, and they told me to cancel it. We have heard it will be there all day.”

“Our whole neighborhood is deeply traumatized,” Blackmer said. “The real question is, was it random? It is the randomness that scares me the most, because the takeaway is, OK, welcome to the big city.”

Sat Jagat Khalsa learned about the shooting when walking his dogs the following morning at approximately 7:30 a.m.

“I don’t feel unsafe,” he said.

Khalsa said it made him think about the strict gun safety laws in New York City, where he lived most of his life before moving to Peterborough five years ago.

Tyler Ward of the Peterborough Select Board said while the town cannot comment, he is horrified by the reports of the incident.

“I can only say that my heart is with the two individuals involved in last night’s incident and their families. It is a harsh reminder that life can change in an instant,” Ward said in a statement.

The Peterborough Police Department declined to comment on the incident, and the town of Peterborough is referring questions to the attorney general’s office.
