The Peterborough Police Department initially responded to a report of a violent incident at a residence on the west end of Grove Street, near the Peterborough Police Station, around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 5. Officers arriving on scene found an adult male deceased in the driveway from an apparent gunshot wound. Another adult man was transported to an area hospital with apparent stab wounds.

The incident occurred during an altercation between two adult neighbors outside their residences on Grove Street, according to Attorney General John M. Formella and New Hampshire State Police Col. Mark B. Hall. The man found dead was identified as Jack Hutchings, 24, of Peterborough. The other man, who was found with apparent stab and incised wounds, is an off-duty officer with the Peterborough Police Department. He was not named and remains hospitalized.

“The investigation is active and ongoing and includes whether the person who appeared to have shot Mr. Hutchings acted in self-defense,” Formella and Hall said in a statement.

An autopsy on Hutchings was completed Monday by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The cause and manner of death will be released once next-of-kin notifications are complete.
