Time to take a stand
At the Peterborough pro-democracy rallies Saturdays and Wednesdays, we get the occasional angry middle finger among the many supportive honks, waves and shouts from drivers passing by.
Our sign collection says what we are standing for, as our country’s constitutional foundation is under a wrecking-ball attack. “AMERICA’S MORAL MOMENT,” “FOR THE GRANDCHILDREN,” “DEMOCRACY / IT’S UP TO US / WE THE PEOPLE,” “APATHY KILLS DEMOCRACY.”
How about a middle finger for our taxes funding a war without a plan that has caused worldwide economic disruption, and bombing civilians (illegal). “TRUMP’S WAR / YOUR WALLET,” “NO ONE VOTED FOR THIS WAR,” “DROP THE FILES NOT BOMBS.” Trump just requested an additional $1.5 trillion for the tools of war.
Or anger at Trump’s tax cuts for the ultra-rich: $4.7 trillion over the next decade, paid in large part by cuts to Medicaid, food assistance and health coverage. “TAX BILLIONAIRES,” “HEALTHCARE NOT WARFARE,” “FEED PEOPLE NOT PROFITS.” Trump’s tax cuts saddle the next generations with an expanded national debt and interest payments (by our taxes) on that debt.
Trump’s illegal tariffs (only Congress can set new taxes or declare war) were paid by U.S. importers who then passed those expenses on to consumers of their products (food, cars, services). Why not be angry that people can’t afford health care, housing, adequate food or a tankful of gas? “REMEMBER TRUMP AT THE PUMP,” “HEALTHCARE NOT WELFARE.”
Other signs: “LOVE THY NEIGHBOR,” “OUR CONSTITUTION MAKES AMERICA GREAT,” “CRY OUR BELOVED COUNTRY,” “ENOUGH CRUELTY.”
“COME STAND WITH US”: Saturdays 1-2 p.m. and Wednesdays 4-5 p.m. at the Route 101-202 intersection, and Sundays 1-2 p.m. at the Dublin traffic circle. We have signs to borrow. The friendly honks, waves and shouts will lift your spirits.
