The Mariposa Museum will present โYearning to Breathe Free,โ an evening of play readings, poetry and discussion exploring immigration and identity, on May 15 and 16 at 7 p.m.
The performances will feature the work of poet and playwright MaryLou DiPietro of Harrisville and playwright Georgia McGill of Merrick, New York. Each evening will conclude with a moderated discussion led by David Blair.
DiPietro will present a reading from her current work, โThe Anatomy of Shame,โ set in San Francisco during World War II. The play follows Italian immigrant and American citizen Guiseppe Antoinette, who is brought to an immigration office for questioning in a story organizers say reflects issues still seen today.
McGill will present โThe Spirit on Ice,โ which follows six Greek goddesses arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after arriving in Astoria without visas.
Local actors will join the playwrights in presenting the works.
The event is free and open to the public, though donations are encouraged to support the playwrights and the museum.
Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 603-924-4555 or registering online at mariposamuseum.org.
