Help Our Own House on June 9–10

The April 28 issue of the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript teems with information about locally sourced housing initiatives. Clearly, dedicated people are working to find how best to address the housing shortage while also considering the different needs of each community.

Yet one urgent need remains largely unmet.

Imagine if all the assisted living facilities in Cheshire and Hillsborough counties—built and supported by many caring people over the years—vanished tomorrow. All gone. Where would the elderly live? Who would drive them to appointments or provide other needed daily support?

That’s what we parents of disabled adults face when we look around for ADA-compliant housing that also provides access to support services neurodivergent adults need to live safely and purposefully within the larger community. We understand that retrofitting existing homes to meet ADA standards can be prohibitively expensive, but cost is only one consideration. Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) may suit some of us, but they best serve those already able to live independently.

On June 9–10, 5 p.m. to 5 p.m., NH Gives will once again host its online fundraising event for nonprofits across the state. We hope you will remember these vulnerable and often overlooked members of our community. Look for Our Own House and help us provide supportive housing for adults with developmental disabilities.

We look forward to when the landscape and alarming statistics begin to change. Please mark your calendar for June 9–10 and consider donating as if these adults were members of your own family. For more information about Our Own House, visit us at ourownhouse.org.
