A hiker who became disoriented in heavy fog while descending Mount Monadnock on Wednesday, May 6, was assisted by rescuers and safely returned to the trailhead, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.
Rachel Sahagun, 44, of Manchester, called for help around 8:59 p.m. after low light and dense fog made it difficult to follow the White Dot Trail about 1.25 miles from the trailhead in Jaffrey, officials said.
A rescue team consisting of a conservation officer and a volunteer from the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team began hiking up the trail around 10:15 p.m. Sahagun later resumed hiking on her own as conditions improved and contacted rescuers at about 10:28 p.m. while nearing the trailhead, officials said.
She returned to the trailhead with the rescue team around 10:45 p.m. and declined medical treatment.
Fish and Game officials said Sahagun was an experienced hiker who had prepared for hiking after dark by carrying extra food, water and an additional light source.
