Response to ‘Actions resulted in disaster’ letter

A recent letter titled โ€œActions resulted in disasterโ€ rightly listed some of the many disasters which have resulted from actions of current Trump appointees. The letter began, however, with the statement, โ€œThe two failed attempts by Democrats to impeach Trump in his first term of office has led, eventually, to a second Trump term.โ€ I respectfully challenge that statement because it seems to attribute blame solely to Democrats for Trump 2.0. The only reason those impeachments were โ€œfailed attemptsโ€ is because the majority of congressional Republicans refused to hold Trump accountable, putting their own political careers and party above their oaths, the Constitution and our countryโ€™s best interests.
The second Trump impeachment was held after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot for Trumpโ€™s inciting that insurrection. In the House, 10 Republican representatives joined all Democrats in voting to impeach. In the Senate, although seven Republican senators joined all Democratic senators to convict Trump, the vote failed because of the opposition of the majority of Republican senators. Trump was acquitted by a vote of 57 to convict and 43 to acquit, which failed by 10 votes to meet the two-thirds vote to convict. Both impeachment events โ€œfailed,โ€ not because of Democrats, but because of Republicans who refused to hold Trump accountable. Had Trump been convicted, he would have been banned from holding any other federal office, and there would have been no second Trump presidency.
I am not interested in belaboring blame for the current political catastrophes we are enduring. Unfortunately, most current Republicans continue to allow themselves to be intimidated, threatened, and bullied by Trump. This results in their cowardly appeasement to Trumpโ€™s desires and their complicity in the disasters of Trump 2.0, instead of courageously defending our Constitution, our country, and our democratic principles.
