Artist and retired professor Susan Wadsworth will present a four-part spring lecture series, โ€œWhy is this art?โ€ at the Jaffrey Civic Center, examining the development of modern abstraction.

Programs begin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the center, 40 Main St., Jaffrey. Topics include โ€œPicasso and Braque and Cubism: Why is this art?โ€ on March 18; โ€œGeorgia Oโ€™Keeffe and Early American Modernism: Why is this art?โ€ on April 22; โ€œJackson Pollock and Mark Rothko: Why is this art?โ€ on May 20; and โ€œEarthworks and Light: Why are these works art?โ€ on June 17.

The informal presentations will explore shifts in artistic styles from the late nineteenth through the twentieth centuries and invite audience questions.
