New Hampshire residents are invited to take part in the 39th annual Backyard Winter Bird Survey on Feb. 14 and 15, hosted by NH Audubon.
The community science project asks participants to count birds and squirrels visiting their backyards during the two-day period. Counts can last as little as 15 minutes and may be done indoors or outside. Observations are submitted through an online form at backyardwinterbirds.nhaudubon.org.
The survey helps track long-term trends in winter bird populations across the state. Participation is free, though donations are accepted.
Last year, 1,953 people participated, reporting 10,490 Dark-eyed Juncos, the most commonly observed species statewide.
