Our national insanity
In the tsunami of daily news, there is a deep pattern that touches us all, whether we live in a normal, safe, civil society or in a place being terrorized by ICE.
The deep pattern is an inversion of lies to facts followed by a quick breaking of things, like the destruction of the East Wing or USAID; then a re-naming, as in the “Trump-Kennedy Center” or in the January 6, 2021, Insurrection, now claimed on the White House website as a day of “peaceful protest.”
Pardons are bought and issued to obvious felons. A weaponized Justice Department investigates political opponents, including NH’s Maggie Goodlander. The Supreme Court and Republican Congress acquiesce to almost every move. Those Epstein files are still not released.
It is getting worse as Trump grows more unstable and more rapacious. He ignored the international rules-based order with a kidnapping and stolen oil fields in Venezuela when we were told, initially, it was all about the drugs. After a run-up of falsehoods about NATO, Trump’s grab for Greenland accompanied by open distain for key European leaders and nations effectively breaks our 77-year, 32-nation NATO alliance, formed for collective security against Russian aggression. Now we are the aggressors. Trust in America is on the line. Those nations that came to our aid after 9/11 may no longer respond if we are in need. We are rapidly becoming an outlier, a pariah, and a less safe country.
Already, we feel financial repercussions from Trump’s capricious tariffs and health-care “adjustments.”
Maybe, finally, the economy will become a wake-up call to more of us in normal safe places. Only if enough people pay attention and speak out will the fog of national insanity begin to lift.
