Jaffrey Parks and Recreation will offer a nutrition and cooking class focused on heart health on Sunday, Jan. 18, highlighting how plant-based foods can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The program, โ€œFoods for a Healthy Heart,โ€ will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Humiston Program Building, 31 Howard Hill Road. Registration is required.

The class will be taught by Dr. Nora E. Hanke, a physician and licensed Food for Life instructor. Hanke will discuss how plant-based diets, which are low in saturated fat and free of dietary cholesterol, can support cardiovascular health and help address risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, atherosclerosis and inflammation.

The class is part of the Food for Life program of the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Sessions include an introductory discussion, video lecture, group conversation and cooking demonstrations, with an opportunity to sample plant-based dishes.

Jaffrey Parks and Recreation will also host additional Food for Life programs, including a brain health class on Saturday, Jan. 24, and a five-week Kickstart series focused on weight management and overall health beginning Jan. 31.
