Francestown Withdrawal: or OR and?
I have been following the ongoing sage of the attempt by Francestown to withdraw from the ConVal School District. I am, however, confused.
In many of your stories about this issue, including in the Dec. 16 subheading, it states, “To pass, needs 60% approval in Francestown or 40% across district.” This is repeated in the story itself.
The story also reads, “In March 2025 . . . Francestown received 81% approval from voters in town but only 38% districtwide . . . .” If state law indeed says 60% OR 40%, that is, “either or,” why wasn’t that result enough for the withdrawal to take place?
A clarification would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Editor’s note: For withdrawal to move forward, a majority of voters across the district would have needed to approve: 60% in the town and 40% overall. Francestownโs 81% approval vote, 416-95, met that threshold, but only 38% of district voters overall approved. The “or” should have been “and.” We apologize for the error.
