Families can explore the early days of holiday filmmaking with a program of century-old silent films, each presented with live musical accompaniment, on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Town Hall Theatre, 40 Main St.
The free program, with a suggested donation of $10, features early adaptations of โA Christmas Carolโ (1910) and โโTwas the Night Before Christmasโ (1905), both produced by Thomas Edisonโs motion picture studio. Each short film runs under 10 minutes.
The program also includes the 1922 feature “Tess of the Storm Country,” starring Mary Pickford. The drama follows tensions between a coastal fishing community and a neighboring wealthy family, with Pickford playing the daughter of a village leader who is jailed early in the story. Though often associated with traditional roles, Pickford was known for portraying characters who challenged authority and took on more active roles than many women of her era were typically allowed on screen.
Live music will be performed by New Hampshire-based silent film accompanist Jeff Rapsis, who provides improvised scores on a digital keyboard.
