The Peterborough Town Library is celebrating the 250th birthday of author Jane Austen with a series of programs throughout December. All events are free, open to the public, and require no registration.

The series begins with โ€œJane Austen on Page and On Screenโ€ on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. Barry Deitz, director of the Conant Public Library in Winchester, will discuss film adaptations of Austenโ€™s novels from the 1940s to the present and how her stories continue to resonate with readers and viewers.

On Friday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m., the library will host a screening of a popular film adaptation marking its 20th anniversary. Attendees are welcome to dress in Regency-era attire. Birthday cake and refreshments will be served. Details are available on the libraryโ€™s website.

The libraryโ€™s book clubs will read and discuss “Persuasion,” Austenโ€™s final completed novel. Books & Banter meets Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m., and the Literary Book Club meets Friday, Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. Copies of the book are available at the Help Desk.
