Black lives matter
While holding a sign at Saturday’s Black Lives Matter rally, a driver stopped for traffic asked “Isn’t it time to move on? What about hungry children?” I didn’t think of an answer quickly enough, but now here it is: There are so many problems in this country, it’s hard to know where to begin. Feeding hungry children, accessing healthcare, education, housing, voting rights and access to voting, on and on. But look at any problem, and you’ll see that it’s worse for black people. They have historically had less access to healthy food, are more likely to be denied appropriate healthcare, have substandard education and housing, and be the victims of violence. Especially pernicious are all the efforts to keep them from being able to vote. Until they have equal access to everything we white people do, then it’s important for us to keep saying that black lives matter. Because society often acts as if they don’t matter, really.
