JRCSD discusses open enrollment

At the Nov. 17 school board meeting, Superintendent Reuben Duncan offered a thoughtful and forward-looking perspective on how education trends may affect the Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative School District.

He noted that โ€œone of the items the state has been very clear on โ€ฆ is the idea of moving to a more โ€˜choiceโ€™ environment,โ€ and explained that part of the districtโ€™s recent work has been to ensure that โ€œwe were in a good position when that world came to us.โ€ New Hampshire is heading in this direction at the state level, and JRCSD is preparing.

Superintendent Duncan emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility, highlighting the goal of building strong systems while โ€œbring[ing] in more revenue โ€“ more revenue that will be able to offset taxes.โ€ That is something both townsโ€™ residents can appreciate.

He spoke about why open enrollment deserves consideration: โ€œBecause I think itโ€™s an avenue that could very quickly bring in revenue for us in the towns of Rindge and Jaffrey.ย  โ€ฆ We have a lot of things to be proud about โ€ฆ other places are not where we are โ€“ we know that. So, if we believe that and weโ€™re proud of that, then why not share it with others?โ€

What stood out was that the board appeared to recognize that New Hampshire is moving toward greater school choice and that JRCSD must thoughtfully position itself. There was no sense of rushing, only a shared commitment to understanding what this means for our towns.

During public comment, Jaffrey and Rindge residents thanked the board for its measured approach. I share that appreciation.

No decisions have been made, nor should they be until the community understands the implications. Beginning this conversation now — openly, transparently, and with the right questions — is the responsible thing to do.
