A 23-year-old hiker from South Easton, Mass., was assisted off Mount Monadnock on Monday evening after suffering a lower leg injury on the White Cross Trail, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.
Conservation officers were notified at about 5:23 p.m. that Samuel Ferragamo was unable to descend the steep trail without help. Ferragamo and his companion were dressed for the near-freezing temperatures but lacked adequate lights. Officers hiked in medical supplies, water, and trekking poles, reaching the pair at 6:53 p.m. and providing care.
With assistance and the additional equipment, Ferragamo was able to hike down, arriving at Park Headquarters at 7:45 p.m. He declined an ambulance and left with his hiking partner. A Mountain Patrol ranger with the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources also assisted.
Fish and Game encourages hikers to support search and rescue activities by buying a Hike Safe Card and reminds hikers to carry these essential items: map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, headlamp, fire starter, first aid kit, whistle, rain/wind jackets and pants and a knife.
