The Monadnock Center for History and Culture will host an open house at the historic Phoenix Mill House on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring demonstrations of Thanksgiving traditions from the 1830s.
Costumed interpreters will prepare Thanksgiving dishes over the open hearth and share stories of how a mill family like Samuel and Nancy Prescott and their four children would have celebrated the holiday. Guests can sample some of the foods that graced the Prescott familyโs table, while Nancy cooks using period recipes and equipment. Samuel will demonstrate wool carding and spinning and discuss the 19th-century textile industry.
The Phoenix Mill House, once home to a mill overseer, is located behind the Monadnock Centerโs main building at 19 Grove St. in downtown Peterborough. Open house hearth cooking days are presented monthly from September through March. Admission is free, and donations are encouraged. Visitors will receive copies of the dayโs recipes to take home.
