Saturday, Nov. 1, was the day that funding for SNAP, the federal food-assistance program, was halted because of the government shutdown. It also marked the weekly pro-democracy vigil at the Routes 101/202 intersection in Peterborough.
More than 70 people rallied with a focus on reinstating SNAP funds that assist 12% of families nationwide, including one in four military households. Some held empty pots and plates in addition to signs.
Participants were encouraged to wear orange hats as a unifying symbol of New Hampshire ruggedness.

Demonstrators also โpassed the hatโ to support the Peterborough Food Pantry, which serves 13 surrounding towns, raising a total of $694. Donations, which are tax-deductible, can be sent to Peterborough Food Pantry, P.O. Box 116, Peterborough, NH 03458.
