Dozens of families, friends and supporters gathered Saturday, Sept. 27 on Crotched Mountain’s accessible trails for “Moving Mountains for Duchenne,” an annual hike and fundraiser hosted by the Peterborough-based Hope for Gus Foundation.

The event drew 165 participants and raised more than $35,000 to support research and families affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare and fatal genetic disorder that primarily affects boys. The foundation was founded in 2010 by Steve and Tonya Dreher in honor of their son, Gus.

“This community continues to show up for us in incredible ways,” said Tonya Dreher, co-founder of Hope for Gus. “We are so grateful to everyone who came out to move mountains — literally and figuratively — for Gus and for all children battling Duchenne.”

Against a backdrop of fall foliage, participants of all ages and abilities walked in solidarity with those affected by DMD. The event also featured live music, family-friendly activities and personal stories from local families.
