Nova Arts will present two evenings of live performance the first weekend of October.

On Friday, Oct. 3, filmmaker and composer Kyle Turgeon performs “Trying,” a live cinema work exploring grief and memory. Turgeon plays cello, synth, and piano while building the film in real time, creating a unique version for each audience. His work has been shown at DOC NYC, the New Orleans Film Festival, and the Toronto Arthouse Film Festival. The performance is part of the Monadnock International Film Festival. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the show beginning at 7:30.

On Sunday, Oct. 5, cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and drummer Tomas Fujiwara join the Julian Gerstin Sextet for an evening of jazz and improvisation. Bynum and Fujiwara have collaborated for more than 30 years, producing over 25 recordings. The Sextet blends jazz with global traditions, featuring clarinetist Anna Patton, trumpeter Don Anderson, pianist Eugene Uman, bassist Wes Brown, drummer Ben James, and Gerstin on percussion. Doors open at 5 p.m., with music beginning at 5:30.

Both performances are all ages with first-come seating. Tickets are available at novaarts.org/events.
