Yes, we are pro-Democracy
Mr. DeWittโs letter suggests that the group who rallies every Saturday in Peterborough are using pro-democracy as a ruse. I strongly disagree. We are not hiding some agenda but rather actively working to strengthen democracy by expressing our views.
In a functioning democracy, power is invested in the people. This power can and should be exercised at the ballot box. (By the way, Trump won by a plurality of votes, not a majority.) But the ballot box is not the only place where the voice of the people should be heard. Rallies, social media, community meetings and even letters to the editors also come to mind.
The individuals who attend these rallies are invested in a democracy where all voices are heard, not just those who currently hold power. For me, that is the epitome of promoting a democracy that will work for all of us.
Mr. Dewitt also makes fun of the idea that our rallies will encourage dialog. But dialog does occur. The waves, the honks, the thumbs – both and up and down as well as the occasional middle finger are all a form of communication – brief but meaningful. And then there are some poignant moments like when a biker yelled out โWhat about Charlie Kirk?โ Then he saw my sign, โViolence is NOT the Answer,โ and he responded, โI agree.โ
But communication isnโt limited to those brief moments. By sharing our beliefs, we are actively fostering conversations that will happen later on in that car or perhaps at the dinner table. In my mind this makes us all stronger.
Finally, Mr. Dewitt , your banner says โTrump was right about everything.โ Everything, really? Iโve known a lot of people but I have never known anyone who was right about everything.
